Five things to do when you're feeling low

I've found that the best way to get your mind off something that's upsetting, or a funky mood in general is to find something else to obsess over. For me, it's blogging and craft projects. It's like therapy! Even if it's something as simple as making a list of projects I can do in the future, or topics I can write about; once my mind is involved in the thought process, all other worries and troubles are forgotten (atleast for that time, and that's good enough). I think everyone needs something to focus on, other than their area of work or studies. These other activities become a refuge in times when your routine life drives you crazy.

When I was in college, and later when I was working, there'd be times I'd feel really sad. Sometimes, I wouldn't even know why. At times like these, I'd grab my music player, put on my sneakers and go for a long walk. Sometimes I'd reach a park and just sit around listening to music. By the time I got back, I'd feel so much better! Nature is totally underrated.

I'm totally not an advocator of emotional eating, but come on, it does work. And why should we judge ourselves for feeling good by eating something decedent?

I would like to meet the person who coined the term Laughter is the best medicine and say 'Hell yeah it is!'. And why wouldn't it be, it's the exact opposite of feeling low. Whether it be a funny show on TV, a humorous book or just something you see while roaming around, a burst of laughter really does the trick.

Here's where I'm going to get really philosophical with you all. A friend once told me that apart from some really unfortunate events, there is no problem in life that can't be solved (you know who you are.). And it's so true, if things are bad, there are solutions. If the thing that's bad is the day, there's tomorrow. If tomorrow is only slightly better, hey, there's a day after that! There's a certain solace one can find in the uncertainty of the future. It gives you hope that if you work at it, life can get better. There's no proof to the contrary.

So those were my go-tos for when I feel low. Today was one of those days, and a combination of some of the above made me feel a whole lot better. I hope it does the same for you all.

  1. This is such a great list. I think I need to get back to my walking, it did wonders for me during a time in my life that was filled with pain, hasty change and uncertainty.

    Thank you for sharing.

  2. Walking is the best. Mostly because you have so many distractions that you forget about your troubles. I hope you never encounter times like that ever again, but I hope you hold on to the habit of walking :)
